enamel

Enamel is glass powder colored with metal oxides. Placed on metal in various ways, it is "baked" at a high temperature and becomes a hard glassy paste.

Cloisonné or enclosed enamel, champlevé enamel (on engraved metal surface), plique-a-jour enamel (without a metal base, Art Nouveau enamel) and variations of painted enamels.
